Glossary



Glossary

Dietetic sound – this is sound that is in the world of the film, these include the sounds made by objects in the film. For example characters voices, sounds made by objects in the story and music represented as coming from instruments in the story.
Non-Dietetic sound - Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action such as mood music, narrators commentary and sound effects that have been added for dramatic effect
Ambient – this is music that sets the mood  of the scene 
SFX – this means sound effects in a abbreviated term
Mood – Music written in various moods and styles for use in films
Tone – The intonation, pitch, and modulation of a composition expressing the meaning, feeling, or attitude of the music.
Genre – is a way we categorize music with similar music
Theme music – is normally a piece of music written specifically for a Character or Tv show.
Voice over – when a person talks over the scene in a film but the characters in the film cannot hear it
Musical score – a written form of a musical composition
Synchronous sounds – Sound that appears to be matched to certain movements occurring in the scene, as when footsteps correspond to feet walking.
Asynchronous sound – contradicting music to the scene that is playing. 
Contrapuntal – when sound doesn't fit the scene but is there for dramatic effect 
Silence – when a scene is completely without sound 
Selective sound – when a some sounds are made more recognizable in the scene
Sound bridges -  a sound used to ease the transitions between each shot.
